Homemade Spiced Chai Mix

On a cold winter day like today, this spiced chai is perfect! Spicy, sweet, and creamy all in one! I made this mix because I wanted an alternative to the grocery store brands which include sugar. This easy homemade mix is made without sugar.

Yes, you can buy ready-made spiced chai tea bags, which I also like to do. But, this homemade mix is a tad stronger. Ready for a hot mug of steamy goodness? It’s super quick to make! Feel free to tweak this recipe according to your own taste.

Ingredients:

1 tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp ground cloves

½ tsp ground cardamom

½ tsp ground ginger

4 tsp Super Sweet Blend (Trim Healthy Mama brand), or see bottom of page for other options

black tea

half-and-half or other creamer, honey, and pure vanilla extract, if desired

Directions:

1. Mix all dry ingredients together; store in a container with lid.

2. Brew 1 tea bag black tea.

3. Add 1 tsp of mixture to tea, along with creamer. Add 1 tsp of honey and a splash of pure vanilla extract, if desired. Stir well. Enjoy!

    1. Hi, Courtney! I hope everything is going well with your new, sweet baby!

Yes, this should be fine to drink while breastfeeding. I’m nursing my five-month old, and I drink a cup of this nearly every day. I often use decaffeinated black tea, and you can vary the strength of the spices in your cup by using more or less of the pre-made mix.

  1. Hi,Jessica. I also like chai so much, often buy ready made spiced tea bags.
Several years ago my church friend gave me mixed spice for chai(souvenir of Nepal) and I made chai using it at home. Yes,taste of homemade chai is stronger and I loved it!
We also can find cinnamon, cloves cardamom, ginger at supermarket.
Maybe I can make chai again at home.Thank you for sharing the recipe!

    1. You are so welcome, Sanae!

There is this brand at the grocery store called Oregon Chai, and I love their tea! I tried to get my mix to taste like theirs, but though it’s close (in my opinion), it’s not exactly the same. Yet, I do like my homemade mix, too. I guess that not every spiced chai will be the same, and that’s okay.

I’m glad that you are able to find the spices to make chai at the supermarket. How nice it was of your friend to give you a mix from Nepal! I wonder how similar that mix tasted compared to the one I’ve put together? Do you know what spiced were in the mix? I’m curious! 🙂

      1. I do not have its package anymore but mostly same as your recipe. Different points were two, that ginger was powdered one and that it contained a small amount of nutmeg. Mixed spices for chai is very popular also in Nepal,India and Bangladesh and we can buy it online or import food stores here.

Japanese people like curry. And this is why we can buy all spices of your recipe (small bottled ones)at supermarket,Iguess.

I searched recipes of chai on internet today and found one using condensed milk instead of milk and one which adds a small amount of black salt. There are many Indian/Nepali restaurants in Japan and many people have opportunity to drink chai there.I am one of them. Homemade chai is more tasty than instant one,I think!

        1. Wonderful, Sanae! Thank you for providing me with so much interesting information! I think I will have to try making the chai mix with a bit of nutmeg and black pepper, and maybe a bit of condensed milk, too. We’ll see how it turns out! 🙂

          P.S. I love curry, too!

  2. Hi Jessica! I made a decaf batch and it’s delicious! Dunno if this is related, but it’s helped my supply/letdown.

    1. Oh, that’s great that you liked it, Courtney! I’m so glad! I never thought it might help with milk supply, but maybe there’s something I don’t know about one or more of the herbs in the tea. I do know for sure that ginger, cloves, and cinnamon are supposed to be really good for our health, though I’m not sure about cardamom, though it may have benefits I just haven’t heard about yet. 🙂

      1. I think it’s probably a coincidence. I have 2 LO nursing voraciously on-demand. I bet they like it too. 🙂
